Our Programme Areas
This pillar addresses the critical challenges of managing natural resources. It focuses on promoting transparency and accountability, advocating for essential legal and institutional reforms. The goal is to ensure that the state, at all levels, has the capacity to manage natural resources in a transparent, accountable, and inclusive way. This ensures that the wealth generated benefits all sectors of society, with a special emphasis on host communities. The pillar covers all natural resources, including minerals, oil, forests, water, land, fisheries, and marine resources.
Building on SARW’s natural resources governance work, this approach focuses on three key areas: Transition Minerals, Just Energy Transition, and Climate Change. The goal is to pressure governments and corporations to align natural resource management and climate change efforts with the imperative of achieving an inclusive and just Socio-Economic Structural Transformation.
This initiative addresses the impact of the global demand for critical minerals on African communities. With approximately 30% of the world’s mineral reserves located in Africa, SARW acknowledges the significant risks of environmental degradation and displacement, especially for marginalized indigenous communities. These communities often face threats to their democratic, socio-economic, and labor rights, compounded by persistent corruption. To address these challenges, SARW seeks to empower these communities by providing basic opportunities and partnering with organizations that support their rights. The strategic approach includes Community Engagement, Social Movement Building, Labor Rights advocacy, and Civil Society Partnerships.
