Training of Rights Defenders on Emerging Human Rights and Environmental Issues Linked to Critical Minerals in Zimbabwe
March 26 -8:00 am - March 29 -5:00 pm
SARW, in collaboration with some civil society organisations (CSOs) in Zimbabwe, led a training session to empower human rights defenders and community-based organisations. This training, attended by 20 participants from communities impacted by lithium mining, served as a platform to address pressing human rights and environmental concerns associated with critical mineral extraction. Throughout the training, participants were equipped with practical tools and strategies to identify, monitor, and report instances of human rights abuses and environmental damage within their communities.
The session fostered an environment conducive to networking and collaboration among participants, enabling the exchange of knowledge and experiences. As a result, the Pamoja Network on Critical Minerals was introduced, representing a collective initiative aimed at catalysing joint action and advocacy efforts to address the challenges affected communities face. By establishing this network, participants are poised to leverage their collective strength and amplify their voices in advocating for the rights and well-being of those impacted by critical minerals extraction in Zimbabwe.
