Training of Rights Defenders on Emerging Human Rights and Environmental Issues DRC
March 21 -8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Recently, SARW, in collaboration with civil society organisations (CSOs) in DRC, organised a transformative two-day training workshop for women and environmental human rights defenders. Over 40 participants eagerly attended, seeking to enhance their understanding of human rights and emerging ecological issues associated with critical minerals mining. Through engaging sessions and practical exercises, these women learned to identify, monitor, and report human rights violations and environmental damage, gaining the tools to advocate for their communities.
Empowered by newfound knowledge and skills, the women drafted a powerful declaration to the government, requesting the establishment of artisanal mining zones within mining squares ceded to mining companies.
This move strengthened their position and showcased their commitment to sustainable practices. Furthermore, the workshop empowered them to leverage New Information and Communication Technologies (NICT) to raise real-time awareness about the challenges they face, fostering public support and enabling them to promote female entrepreneurship in the mining sector. Their resilience and determination serve as a beacon of hope, inspiring women across the region to stand up for their rights and advocate for change, demonstrating the transformative power of grassroots activism.
