SARW launches the UNTAPPED POTENTIAL: Gender Inequality in Southern African Mining Report
February 6 -6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
On the 6th of February 2024 during the Alternative Mining Indaba, SARW launched the UNTAPPED POTENTIAL: Gender Inequality in Southern African Mining Report which is based on research conducted in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. It examines the roles of governments and mining companies in the mining sector and recommends strategies to end gender inequality.
In Southern Africa, women face discrimination and limited opportunities in the mining industry. Although national policies and laws promote gender equality, progress is slow. The report recommends that governments mandate mines to pursue gender equity, penalize companies that discriminate, regulate artisanal mining, and combat prejudices and stereotypes. Companies should set clear targets and monitor progress toward gender equity.
