Conference on Corporate Accountability of BRICS Mining Companies in Africa
August 21, 2023 - August 22, 2023

SARW monitors corporate accountability in BRICS’ expanding role in Africa’s Extractives industry. The consortium is shaping new standards, with China as the largest buyer of African mining outputs. As critical mineral extraction accelerates, robust accountability mechanisms are crucial to minimise negative social and environmental consequences. Recent discussions highlighted the complexities of disclosure and the consequences of abandoned mines. The need for ethical and responsible practices to address environmental concerns, shareholder prioritisation over local communities, and insufficient transparency and accountability are all critical issues to monitor and advocate for to promote improved corporate accountability. Urgent action is needed to address human rights, labour practices, and environmental standards. As part of its continued work, SARW, in partnership with TWN, hosted the Conference on Corporate Accountability of BRICS Mining Companies in Africa from August 21st to 22nd, 2023, on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit. This conference shed light on the critical issue of corporate accountability concerning mining operations by BRICS countries in Africa. It emphasised the need for a tool that allows civil society to monitor the practices of these companies continuously.
