Every February, two mining conversations happen in Cape Town simultaneously. A few kilometres apart, they could not be more different.

Inside the Cape Town International Convention Centre, the Mining Indaba convenes financiers, mining executives and government ministers negotiating the terms under which Africa’s mineral wealth will be extracted. Outside it, at St George’s Cathedral, the Alternative Mining Indaba asks the question the Convention Centre never does: on whose terms, and for whose benefit?

“Alternative Stories of Mining — United in Solidarity with Mining-Affected Communities across the Continent.”

It was a deliberate counter-positioning. SARW arrived not with reports — but with infrastructure.

The delegation was led by Monica Mbugua, who also served on the AMI Steering Committee and guided SARW’s pavilion strategy through to the final Communiqué drafting and Memorandum handover at the CTICC.

Their roles were not parallel — they were sequential: Day 1 evidence. Day 2 tools and mobilisation. Day 3 consolidated demands.
