AGOSA Training – Call for Applicants
SADC Regional Training of Trainers of environmental activists and campaigners on tactics and techniques to protect themselves against SLAPPs
The Southern Africa Resource Watch (SARW) under the Coalition Against SLAPPs in Africa calls for applicants for a regional training of Trainers of environmental activists and campaigners on tactics and techniques to protect themselves against SLAPPs. This call is for activists and campaigners from SADC countries.
This training is being planned under one of SARW’s projects- the Action on Gas and Oil in Southern Africa (AGOSA) Project. The AGOSA project aims to promote civic participation towards transitioning from oil and gas in the SADC region. The project has two key objectives. Firstly, build the capacity of CSOs, activists, and campaigners in SADC; secondly, facilitate diplomatic engagements to influence SADC governments to phase out oil and gas extraction as part of their commitment to the Paris Agreement.
With the growing demand to move away from using oil, coal, and gas, many African governments and businesses are worried about the financial implications of this transition. On the other hand, activists and campaigners who advocate for using renewable energy sources and abandoning fossil fuels are facing increasing legal challenges, known as SLAPPs and threats. They need support to build their legal capacity to continue their essential work. The proposed training program is designed to provide comprehensive guidance on the legal framework surrounding community rights and how to use strategic litigation to protect these rights from SLAPPs and victimisation. It also aims to offer practical advice, case studies, and tools for advocates and lawyers working to defend community rights.
If you are interested in applying for this training, send in your details, CV and 500 words of motivation on why you should be selected through this link.
The deadline for applications is 20 January 2024. Only selected applicants will be communicated with.
