The Pamoja Critical Minerals Alliance (PCMA) Zimbabwe Stands with Zambia after Chambishi Tailings Disaster

The Pamoja Critical Minerals Alliance (PCMA) Zimbabwe Chapter has issued a solidarity statement following the 18 February 2025 environmental disaster in Zambia’s Chambishi Multi-Facility Economic Zone. The incident — caused by the collapse of a Sino-Metals Leach tailings dam — released over 50 million litres of acidic effluent into the Kafue River, threatening livelihoods, ecosystems, and communities across Zambia and the wider SADC region.

In its statement, PCMA Zimbabwe:

  • Expresses solidarity with communities in Zambia affected by the spill.

  • Calls for greater corporate accountability and prosecution of companies responsible.

  • Urges SADC governments to harmonise best practices on tailings management.

  • Demands an independent investigation into the full regional impact of the disaster.

PCMA Zimbabwe reaffirms its commitment to protecting communities, human rights, and the environment in the exploitation of critical minerals essential for the just energy transition.
