Pamoja Demands Fair Share of Mineral Wealth

HARARE – February 26, 2026 – Civil Society organisations, activists and policy advocates from across the continent convened in Harare on Thursday for the launch of the Pamoja Critical Minerals Alliance, issuing a strong declaration calling for a people-centred approach to Africa’s mineral wealth and energy transition

Meeting under the theme of unity and solidarity, delegates described the moment as “decisive” for the continent, noting that Africa sits at the heart of the global shift towards renewable energy and green technologies.

The continent holds vast reserves of cobalt, lithium, manganese, graphite, platinum group metals, rare earth elements. copper and bauxite – minerals essential for electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, digital infrastructure and advanced manufacturing.

Despite this abundance, the Alliance said Africa continues to export largely unprocessed raw minerals while facing persistent poverty, inequality and unemployment. More than 600 million Africans still lack access to electricity.
