Africa’s Critical Minerals: Mapping Data, Power, and Potential

Introduction

The global energy transition is fuelling an unprecedented demand for minerals. As countries race to decarbonise, Africa has emerged as a leading producer of many of the minerals that power renewable technologies — including copper, cobalt, chromium, lithium, and graphite.

Yet despite this central role, the continent continues to lose value through raw exports, limited refining, and fragmented infrastructure.

To help change this, SARW has launched a new data-driven series on Critical Energy Transition Minerals (CETMs), designed to equip policymakers, civil society, and regional actors with the insights needed to strengthen beneficiation, build resilient value chains, and advocate for just transition outcomes.
