The African Extractivism & the Green Transition (AEGT) Workshop

The African Extractivism & the Green Transition (AEGT) project held its mid-project workshop from 24 to 26 March 2026 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The three-day workshop convened the project’s researchers, research assistants, and invited stakeholders to review progress across the eight research studies underway, share emerging findings, and plan for publication and knowledge mobilisation.
The workshop was structured around sequential presentations of individual research studies, two facilitated brainstorming sessions on cross-cutting themes, and forward-looking sessions on data management, stakeholder engagement, and project governance. An evening reception hosted by the Canadian High Commission in Tanzania and a showcase event at the University of Dar es Salaam hosted by the Institute for Resource Assessment provided additional networking opportunities.
A dedicated session on 26 March featured a presentation and live demonstration of the African Critical Minerals Atlas (ACMA) by the Southern Africa Resource Watch (SARW). The session was originally programmed as an AMAP presentation; the updated title reflects the launch of the broader ACMA platform, of which AMAP is a component.
ACMA is both a specialised knowledge-building tool and a policy and accountability instrument. Its core objectives are to:

Consolidate and visualise critical minerals information in an accessible, interactive format;

Support public accountability and evidence-based advocacy;

Enable independent monitoring of supply chains, ESG performance, and company/government commitments;

Strengthen civil society capacity to assess whether critical minerals development is contributing to equitable industrialisation, electrification, and community development outcomes;

Serve as shared research infrastructure for academics, civil society, policymakers, and communities.
At its pilot phase, the Atlas covers six countries and six mining operations across key critical energy transition minerals (CETMs), including copper, cobalt, lithium, graphite, manganese, and PGMs. The Atlas is built on ArcGIS Experience Builder and is designed to be scalable and continuously updated.
