From August 5 – 9, 2024, a significant meeting was held in Mozambique, bringing together political parties and key stakeholders to discuss the critical issues of climate resilience, energy transition, and natural resource management. Organised by SARW and IMD, the discussions focused on the role of political parties in shaping energy policies and promoting environmental protection in the face of climate change.
Participants explored the potential for renewable energy in Mozambique, emphasizing the country’s capacity for solar and hydroelectric power. The importance of a just energy transition was highlighted, with an emphasis on empowering communities and ensuring that the benefits of natural resource exploitation are equitably shared.
The event also stressed the need for African countries to add value to their minerals by investing in local production of green technologies. This approach aims to reduce dependence on foreign companies and ensure sustainable development. The discussions underscored the urgency of transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy and the critical role political parties play in leading this change.
As the meeting concluded, action items were identified, including strategies for increasing access to clean energy, involving communities in decision-making, and fostering an African narrative around the just transition. The event marked a pivotal step toward sustainable energy practices in Mozambique and set the stage for ongoing collaboration among stakeholders.
