On July 23rd, 2024, the Ghana ASM (Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining) Report was launched in Accra, Ghana. The event, organized by Trust Africa in collaboration with SARW, marked a significant milestone in addressing the challenges and opportunities within Ghana’s artisanal and small-scale mining sector. In addition to the report launch, the event introduced the Pamoja Critical Minerals Alliance (PCMA), a new initiative focused on promoting sustainable practices and responsible governance in the critical minerals sector across Africa.

Key Findings and Discussions: The Ghana ASM Report highlights several key areas of concern, including environmental degradation, regulatory challenges, and the social impacts of artisanal mining. The report calls for stronger regulatory frameworks, formalization of the ASM sector, and greater community involvement in decision-making processes.

Environmental and Social Impacts: The discussions emphasized the need for sustainable mining practices to mitigate environmental damage and address social issues such as poor working conditions and child labour. The report also stressed the importance of safeguarding community rights and ensuring that the benefits of mining activities are equitably shared.
