ZAMBIA’S IMPLEMENTATION STATUS ON THE CRITICAL MINERALS STRATEGY AND THE THREE MILLION METRIC TONNES COPPER PRODUCTION STRATEGY

A high-level dialogue hosted by the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development (MMMD) and the Southern Africa Resource Watch (SARW) brought together government representatives, civil society, trade unions, student movements, and academia to assess Zambia’s progress on its critical minerals and copper production strategies.
Progress was noted, including:

Launch of the Critical Minerals Strategy

DRC-Zambia collaboration on EV batteries

Inclusion of women and youth in policy
But gaps remain, particularly in:

Financing and coordination
-
Environmental and ESG safeguards
-
Support for artisanal miners
-
Clear roadmaps for value addition
