SUMMARY:Training of Rights Defenders on Emerging Human Rights and Environmental Issues Linked to Critical Minerals in Zimbabwe
DESCRIPTION:SARW\, in collaboration with some civil society organisations (CSOs) in Zimbabwe\, led a training session to empower human rights defenders and community-based organisations. This training\, attended by 20 participants from communities impacted by lithium mining\, served as a platform to address pressing human rights and environmental concerns associated with critical mineral extraction. Throughout the training\, participants were equipped with practical tools and strategies to identify\, monitor\, and report instances of human rights abuses and environmental damage within their communities. \nThe session fostered an environment conducive to networking and collaboration among participants\, enabling the exchange of knowledge and experiences. As a result\, the Pamoja Network on Critical Minerals was introduced\, representing a collective initiative aimed at catalysing joint action and advocacy efforts to address the challenges affected communities face. By establishing this network\, participants are poised to leverage their collective strength and amplify their voices in advocating for the rights and well-being of those impacted by critical minerals extraction in Zimbabwe.

SUMMARY:Training of Rights Defenders on Emerging Human Rights and Environmental Issues DRC
DESCRIPTION:Recently\, SARW\, in collaboration with civil society organisations (CSOs) in DRC\, organised a transformative two-day training workshop for women and environmental human rights defenders. Over 40 participants eagerly attended\, seeking to enhance their understanding of human rights and emerging ecological issues associated with critical minerals mining. Through engaging sessions and practical exercises\, these women learned to identify\, monitor\, and report human rights violations and environmental damage\, gaining the tools to advocate for their communities. \nEmpowered by newfound knowledge and skills\, the women drafted a powerful declaration to the government\, requesting the establishment of artisanal mining zones within mining squares ceded to mining companies. \nThis move strengthened their position and showcased their commitment to sustainable practices. Furthermore\, the workshop empowered them to leverage New Information and Communication Technologies (NICT) to raise real-time awareness about the challenges they face\, fostering public support and enabling them to promote female entrepreneurship in the mining sector. Their resilience and determination serve as a beacon of hope\, inspiring women across the region to stand up for their rights and advocate for change\, demonstrating the transformative power of grassroots activism.

SUMMARY:SARW launches the UNTAPPED POTENTIAL: Gender Inequality in Southern African Mining Report
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column]	\n[vc_column_text]\nOn the 6th of February 2024 during the Alternative Mining Indaba\, SARW launched the UNTAPPED POTENTIAL: Gender Inequality in Southern African Mining Report which is based on research conducted in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)\, Mozambique\, South Africa\, Zambia\, and Zimbabwe. It examines the roles of governments and mining companies in the mining sector and recommends strategies to end gender inequality. \nIn Southern Africa\, women face discrimination and limited opportunities in the mining industry. Although national policies and laws promote gender equality\, progress is slow. The report recommends that governments mandate mines to pursue gender equity\, penalize companies that discriminate\, regulate artisanal mining\, and combat prejudices and stereotypes. Companies should set clear targets and monitor progress toward gender equity. \n[/vc_column_text]	\nDownload Report \n[vc_column_text text_align=”left”]\nGallery\n[/vc_column_text]	\n[/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Climate Change Action - Critical Minerals and Energy Transition in Africa
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column]	\n[vc_column_text]As part of its efforts to support climate actions in Africa and generate evidence for the COP processes\, SARW organises various dialogues and engagements with civil society\, businesses\, and governance. These activities aim to inform Africa’s stance on critical minerals and the energy transition. During the Africa Climate Summit in Kenya\, SARW hosted a strategic meeting to advance its work on critical minerals and energy transition. The Meeting on Climate Change Action\, Critical Minerals\, and Energy Transition in Africa was pivotal in advancing SARW’s approach to challenges at the intersection of climate change\, minerals\, and energy. It emphasised the importance of unified action\, informed policymaking\, and responsible resource management. The collective wisdom gained from this meeting offers hope and a roadmap for sustainable development in African nations.[/vc_column_text]	\nAccess the full meeting \n[vc_column_text text_align=”left”]\nGallery\n[/vc_column_text]	\n[/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Conference on Corporate Accountability of BRICS Mining Companies in Africa
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column]	\n[vc_column_text]SARW monitors corporate accountability in BRICS’ expanding role in Africa’s Extractives industry. The consortium is shaping new standards\, with China as the largest buyer of African mining outputs. As critical mineral extraction accelerates\, robust accountability mechanisms are crucial to minimise negative social and environmental consequences. Recent discussions highlighted the complexities of disclosure and the consequences of abandoned mines. The need for ethical and responsible practices to address environmental concerns\, shareholder prioritisation over local communities\, and insufficient transparency and accountability are all critical issues to monitor and advocate for to promote improved corporate accountability. Urgent action is needed to address human rights\, labour practices\, and environmental standards. As part of its continued work\, SARW\, in partnership with TWN\, hosted the Conference on Corporate Accountability of BRICS Mining Companies in Africa from August 21st to 22nd\, 2023\, on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit. This conference shed light on the critical issue of corporate accountability concerning mining operations by BRICS countries in Africa. It emphasised the need for a tool that allows civil society to monitor the practices of these companies continuously.[/vc_column_text]	\nAccess the full meeting \n[vc_column_text text_align=”left”]\nGallery\n[/vc_column_text]	\n[/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Women and Youth Initiatives on Climate Change and Just Energy Transition
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column]	\n[vc_column_text]SARW acknowledges that Initiatives taken by women and youth regarding climate change and a just energy transition are incredibly important. Although they are often marginalised and excluded\, these two groups make up a significant portion of the population affected by climate change\, and they can contribute to the solutions that will lead to a more sustainable future. Women and youth bring unique perspectives and experiences to the table\, which can result in innovative solutions to our problems. Therefore\, their participation is crucial in achieving a sustainable future. To ensure their voice and agency are captured and harnessed\, SARW implements various initiatives focused on women and youth.[/vc_column_text]	\n[vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]Access South Africa Report [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]Access Zimbabwe Report [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner]	\n[vc_column_text text_align=”left”]\nGallery: Women and Youth Symposium – JHB\n[/vc_column_text]	\n	\n[vc_column_text text_align=”left”]\nGallery: Zimbabwe Women and Youth Symposium\n[/vc_column_text]	\n[/vc_column][/vc_row]
